Emergency Kit

What happens when SOMETHING happens?

Yes, I know you probably don’t want to spend a lot of time thinking about your death or your house burning down or even a long hospital stay, but wouldn’t you like to know that you and your loved ones are prepared?

Whenever I hear of people’s struggle with life-changing events it reminds me that every household should have an “Emergency Kit”.

I’m not talking about a place to stash your monthly bank statements.  NO, this kit has two purposes only:  making sure your household runs as smoothly as possible even if you’re not in your house and when it’s time – wrapping up your estate easily.  It contains a list of accounts, online and offline, along with the relevant passwords.  It has copies of your will, your trust documents and any final care instructions. It has your life insurance policy along with the phone number. It has a phone list of people who must be called.  But it also contains instructions on what to feed the dog and who can fix the leaky faucet.

What would your significant other need to know to put the kids on the bus, make a doctor’s appointment or get them to soccer?  How does he or she access your bank account to pay the bills?  What bills need to be paid?  What if someone outside your family had to come in to pick up the pieces?

If this sounds like a good idea but you’re not sure where to get started,  I’ve decided to make it a little easier for you to complete your own Emergency Kit.  It’s not rocket science, but inside you’ll have templates for your household, financial, medical and estate details.  All you have to do is fill in the blanks and hole-punch the documents.

A fire? Grab it and go.

Terminal illness? Make sure your loved ones can spend their time grieving, not cursing your lack of organizational skills.

Not expecting anything bad to happen? All the more reason to get started today on your own Emergency Kit!
